Change of Character (ChoCh) In Trading Simplified

I used to think every break was a reversal.

EUR/USD would break a small level, I'd reverse my position. Price would fake me out. Every. Single. Time.

A trader told me: "You're confusing CHoCH with MSS."
A CHoCH (Change of Character) is the first sign that a trend might be ending. Choch occurs when the price breaks the most recent minor swing high or low within an active trend.

Knowing the difference between CHoCH and MSS, you will avoid fake reversals.

In this guide, I'll show you:

  • What CHoCH is
  • How to spot valid CHoCH
  • How to trade CHoCH

Let's dive in.

What is a Change of Character (CHoCH)?

A Change of Character (CHoCH) happens when price breaks the most recent minor structural level, AGAINST the current trend. It's the first crack in the trend's foundation.

Here's the difference from MSS:

  • CHoCH breaks AGAINST the minor structural level (warning)
  • MSS breaks AGAINST the major structural level (trend change)

In an uptrend, CHoCH occurs when:

Price is making higher highs and higher lows… then breaks BELOW a previous higher low.

ChoCh example on an uptrend (1)

That break tells you: "Buyers failed to defend the structure. Sellers are
getting stronger."

In a downtrend, CHoCH occurs when:

Price is making lower highs and lower lows… then breaks ABOVE a previous lower high.

ChoCh example on an downtrend

That break tells you: "Sellers failed to hold the structure. Buyers are stepping in."

CHoCH doesn't mean the trend has reversed. It means the trend is WEAKENING.

Think of it like your car making a strange noise. It's not broken yet, but
something's off. That's CHoCH, an early warning that the current trend might be ending.

How to Identify CHoCH?

CHoCH has a specific structure. Here's what I look for:

CHoCH in an Uptrend (Bearish Warning):

  1. Price is making higher highs and higher lows
  2. Price makes a new high
  3. Price pulls back and breaks BELOW the previous higher low
ChoCh example on an uptrend (1)

Example:

  • High 1: 1.1000
  • Low 1: 1.0950 (higher low)
  • High 2: 1.1020 (new higher high)
  • Price drops and breaks BELOW 1.0950 → CHoCH

This is the first sign the uptrend is in trouble.

What to Do When You See CHoCH?

CHoCH is a warning, not a signal to reverse your trades immediately.

Here's my exact process:

Step 1: Stop Trading the Current Trend

If I see a CHoCH in an uptrend, I STOP looking for buy setups.

The structure is broken. I don't trust it anymore.

Same in a downtrend, if I see a bullish CHoCH (breaks above lower high), I stop looking for sell setups.

Step 2: Watch for Confirmation

CHoCH alone is not enough to trade the reversal.

I need to see a Market Structure Shift (MSS), which is when price breaks the
MAIN low (in an uptrend) or MAIN high (in a downtrend).

Until that happens, I stay flat or manage existing positions.

Step 3: Manage Open Trades

If I have an open trade in the current trend direction when CHoCH happens:

Option 1: Take partial profits
Option 2: Move stop loss to breakeven
Option 3: Close the trade if near target anyway

I don't hold through CHoCH hoping for the best.

Step 4: Prepare for the Opposite Direction

After CHoCH, I start watching for:

  • Potential MSS (full reversal)
  • Order blocks forming in the new direction
  • Liquidity grabs that might fuel the reversal

Remember:

CHoCH = Warning sign

MSS = Reversal confirmation

How to Trade CHoCH?

I use a CHoCH as a confirmation that the trend is continuing or pulling back. If it's pulling back, I take a scalp counter trend. If it's a continuation, I trade the continuation trend
